Rules for the Competition
The Competition aims to offer young people:

  • The experience of performing on a public stage.
  • An opportunity to showcase their musical talent in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere
  • Impartial written assessment of performance by experienced adjudicators.

The competition is open to all, from Key Stage 2 upwards.  All candidates should be under 18 years of age on 31 August 2020.

To be eligible, candidates must live or attend school in Purbeck (incorporating Swanage, Langton Matravers, Worth Matravers, Kingston, Corfe Castle, Stoborough, Studland & Wareham).

An accompanist is available, but candidates must provide a copy of the piano accompaniment music.

The maximum length of any performance is:  KS2: 4 minutes;
KS3, KS4 & KS5:   10 minutes.

Candidates may enter the competition on more than one instrument, but can only win one prize.   Only the best performance will be counted.

Amplification will be provided to play vocal or percussionist backing tracks.  Candidates must provide these on CD or USB stick at least 2 weeks before the competition.  All media must be clearly marked, and will be returned after the competition.

Backing tracks must not include the part being performed.

A microphone is available for use only by vocalists singing to an amplified backing track, or for those singing while playing amplified instruments such as electric guitar.

Sheet music copies of the solo part must be handed to the Adjudicators desk before the performance session starts on the day of the competition (with the exception of some ‘contemporary’ music, which may not be available).

All candidates should be available to take part in the Sunday evening concert if invited to do so. At least the best 3 performers in each category will be invited to perform in the evening.

All competition sessions, and the Sunday evening concert, will be open to the public.
Refreshments will be served throughout the morning and afternoon in the foyer at the back of the church.  Entrance to all parts of the day will be free, with a retiring collection at the end of the evening concert.

An overall winner and runner-up of the combined Key Stage 3, 4 & 5 classes will be awarded a prize at the end of the competition.  The overall winner will be invited to take part in the Rotary District Event; details to follow.

Photographs of young musicians may be used to illustrate future competitions or to illustrate any press report on this year’s event.  Please indicate on the entry form if you do not want your image to be included.
